Google Inc.'s (GOOG) search sites in China suddenly stopped working on Tuesday, and the U.S. Internet giant, after initially taking the blame for a technical glitch, reversed itself and said that it had concluded China was blocking users' searches with its 'Great Firewall.'

Google said that its search traffic in China had returned to normal. 'For the time being this issue seems to be resolved,' Google said in a statement.

Still, the episode demonstrated how fraught with confusion the relationship between China and Google remains, and it could represent a sharp escalation of the country's battle with Google a week after the company stopped obeying Chinese censorship rules.

Google struggled Tuesday to discern the cause of the massive disruption, in which users received error messages for Google searches from China on Google.com.hk. Google began routing Chinese Internet users to its Hong Kong-based site last week as it said it would no longer comply with China's censoring policies.
