Chinese consumers are now able to use their mobile phones to text their complaints and receive warnings from "91600", a platform established by China Association for Quality Promotion (CAQP) which opened on Wednesday, the day before the International Day for the Protection of Consumers' Rights.

"This makes it easier for people to reach us," said Chen Chuanyi, secretary-general of CAQP, "and we have a more convenient channel to publicize product information and warnings." he added.

The "91600" platform can receive text messages from China Mobile, China Unicom and Xiaolingtong, the services offered by China Telecom and China Netcom.

Once a message is received, the CAQP will immediately handle the complaints and send a reply to the consumer to show what progress has been made, said Chen.

The platform can also be used to carry out nationwide surveys, said the secretary-general.

Mobile phone users in China are expected to top 600 million by 2010, which means 45 out of 100 people will be connected to a wireless network, according to the Ministry of Information Industry.
