Look, you don't know me from Adam. But I was a better man with you as a woman than I ever was with a woman as a man. Know what I mean?

Early photos of the 2010 BMW X6 M show a blue BMW X5 cruising alongside. This isn't just any X5, of course. Rather, it's the 2010 BMW X5 M, which is making its debut at the 2009 Shanghai Auto Show. And with the exception of its more conservative bodywork and five-passenger seating, the BMW X5 M is identical to the X6 M.
We wonder if this M version of the X5 is actually a 10th birthday gift from the company's Motorsport division. You'll recall that BMW's original crossover SUV debuted for the 2000 model year at the height of sport-utility mania. And while we've seen some fairly quick and impressively agile BMW X5s over the years, none of them quite compare to the 2010 X5 M.
This X5 M can accelerate to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds, according to BMW. The old, first-generation X5 4.8is, the closest we ever got to an M-badge X5 before, couldn't even break 7 seconds.
Said quickness comes by way of a highly advanced twin-turbocharged, direct-injected, 4.4-liter V8 engine. The intake and exhaust manifolds are reversed on this engine, allowing the two twin-scroll turbochargers to nest in the vee between the cylinder banks. Not only is this design more space-efficient, it also allows for a single, two-piece exhaust manifold with shorter, wider exhaust ducts to minimize pressure losses to the turbos.
The point of this design is to create vast amounts of torque over a broad range, and the 2010 BMW X5 M has 500 pound-feet of it all the way from 1,500-5,650 rpm. You also get 555 horsepower at 6,000 rpm. A six-speed automatic transmission drives all four wheels through BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system. Aluminum shift paddles are standard, and you'll need them to access the X5 M's launch control feature. Also included is a limited-slip rear differential.
Although it's hard to imagine a BMW X5 thundering down back roads, the Motorsport division engineers have apparently retuned the standard X5 suspension to accommodate that possibility. The rear suspension mounts are stiffer, the control-arm bushings are upgraded and the whole SUV sits 0.4 inch lower. A self-leveling rear air suspension is standard.
Naturally, there's a massive amount of tire as well, with 275/40R20 run-flat tires mounted in front and 315/35R20s in back. Same goes for the brakes, which consist of 15.6-inch front rotors with four-piston fixed calipers and 15.2-inch rear rotors with floating calipers.
Inside the cabin, the 2010 BMW X5 M takes things just as far as the X6 M, setting you up in M Sport seats with big bolsters and giving you an M Sport steering wheel to grab. The tachometer includes a variable redline, and cabin displays are backlit in white. In addition, the optional head-up display has M-specific programmable features.
